You know, Caldera has not gone entirely proprietary.  The 3.1 ISO9660
images of OpenLinux Workstation and Server editions are still freely 
distributable.  In fact, I just retrieved copies of them today, and
burned them to CD for my InstallFest kit.  

No idea whether they're decent distributions these days, though.   I
haven't installed anything from Caldera in years.  (Anyone else remember
the old Caldera Network Desktop Preview 2?  That was quite cool, for its
day.)

Linux-Mandrake 8.0 or RH 7.1 would indeed make decent choices for
"desktop" arrivals to the Linux world.  But don't forget my top
recommendation for such folk, SuSE.

(I'm betting that Libranet is also a winner on that category, but
haven't yet had a chance to sample-install the CD of _that_ in my
InstallFest kit, either.)
