We have a great opening for a Linux Design Engineer on our R&D Workstation Services team at Hewlett Packard - please feel free to forward this info to potential candidates. Our team provides Workstation Services for HP's engineering community for both the Linux and Windows platforms.  This opening is for a design engineer with experience in group Linux workstation administration who understands the needs of Linux users and the R&D community.  The engineer will be part of a team that designs and develops services such as automated workstation builds, Linux workstation backup, and encryption.  They will also consult with labs on solutions for managing their workstation environments.  This is not a sys admin or support position. Linux Workstation Services Design Engineer

The primary responsibility of this role is to design and oversee the development of end user workstation and data management programs with specific focus on Linux users in the R&D user community.  The job requires an individual who can rapidly understand business requirements, assess the fit with current and emerging standards, and work within a team to provide rapid but effective results - all with an eye toward aligning with future standards.  As a member of the R&D workstation services team, you will:

 *   Research, design, develop, configure, integrate, test and maintain existing and new IT services for the support of R&D workstations (PC Backup, PC Setup and Migration, PC Encryption, PC Virtualization)
 *   Work across the IT organization to ensure that services integrate and align with standards or, when appropriate, work within IT to evolve future standards
 *   Analyze business requirements, perform infrastructure design and integration of various software and hardware components, coding of modifications or new programs
 *   Create service documentation and test plans; prepare required documentation and participate in architecture reviews
 *   Direct engineering efforts towards usability, self-service, and zero-support needed goals
 *   Participate in implementation and deployment of Plan of Record (POR) initiated activities requiring programming, design, and development


Education and Experience Required:

Typically a technical Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience and a minimum of 6 years related experience or a Master's degree and a minimum of 4 years of experience.

Knowledge and Skills Required:

This position requires a design/development engineer with flexible and adaptable skills . Our services require the integration of various technologies and process combinations including workstation and PC clients, operating systems (emphasis on Linux,) image and installation management, off-the-shelf applications, virtualization, script writing, and automation of processes such a workstation backup.  In addition, you must be a strong communicator and a problem-solver, and have the ability to collaborate in a team.

MUST:

 *   Knowledge of industry trends and technologies
 *   1-3 years experience with workstation system administration (installation, hardware, trouble-shooting)
 *   Linux distributions: Ubuntu, Redhat versions 4 and 5, (certification preferred)
 *   Familiarity with basic software development practices (version control)
 *   Bash
 *   Knowledge of basic network configuration
 *   Excellent written and verbal communication skills
 *   Ability to multi-task across projects
 *   Ability to think out-of-the-box to apply technology to solve business problems
 *   Ability to work in a dynamic and changing environment
In addition, experience with the following is preferred:

 *   CFEngine
 *   R&D environments
 *   Workstation backup
 *   HP Configuration manager
 *   Encryption
 *   Windows XP, Vista 64-bit, Windows 7 and configuration management (MS certification preferred)
 *   Visual Studio with Visual Basic
 *   C++
