About the role
This position, reporting to the Manager of Web Operations, will be a leading
member of the team responsible for the design, deployment, administration,
maintenance, troubleshooting and performance of VMware Web Operations
customer-facing services as well as systems used by internal VMware users.
We are looking for a results driven experienced individual with proven
analytical & problem solving skills working with highly complex system
implementations.
The successful candidate will work primarily in Palo Alto, CA and make visits
to a Silicon Valley-based data center.
Responsibilities
* Work closely with the applications development and database administration
teams, guiding developers in best practices related to using the underlying
Linux infrastructure and assisting them in resolving application and
performance problems.
* Ability to utilize past experience with server, storage and network
technologies to define technical architecture for enterprise applications and
understand business requirements to make technical recommendations that solve
business requirements
* Proven experience developing Shell and/or Perl scripts to support Linux
server optimization and automation of system and software application tasks.
* Ability to lead projects through full lifecycle including requirements
gathering, design, test, documentation and implementation
* Willingness to work beyond core business hours, if necessary to minimize
business interruption during planned or unplanned system modifications
* Strong communication, documentation, teamwork, and relationship-building
skills. Ability to communicate to technical staff (applications development
and technical services) and management
* Manage servers systems, including installation, configuration, and
troubleshooting of ESX and Linux servers.
* Provide tier 2 and 3 support of Virtual Infrastructure applications and
infrastructure.
* Participate in 7x24 support, including weekend system prep and on-call
pager rotations.
Required Skills And Experience
* Red Hat Enterprise Server (ES) 3.x/4.x administration - certification
preferred.
* Experience with LAMP, Apache, PHP, mySql, CMS.
* Experience in web operations/production environments.
* 10+ years experience in Information Technology or related field.
* 7+ years experience working as a Linux or UNIX system administrator.
* Enterprise operations experiences including working knowledge of enterprise
architecture and infrastructure running highly available web applications
with established metrics to measure SLAs
* Experience with monitoring tools such as Cacti, Nagios
* 24x7 customer support experiences in a data center environment.
* Enterprise operations experiences including working knowledge of enterprise
architecture and infrastructure.
* System administration scripting skill and experience

* Strong analytical and problem solving skills
* Leadership skills to guide and mentor the work of less experienced
personnel
* Strong communication skills
* Good ability to lead and work as part of a team
