(Open Source Software Developer)

The Knowledge Media Laboratory (KML) of The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching in Stanford, California (http://www.carnegiefoundation.org/kml/) is exploring innovative ways to take advantage of emerging technologies and new media to transform the knowledge implicit in effective practice and educational transformation efforts into ideas, theories, and resources that can be shared widely to advance teaching and student learning at multiple levels.

The KML’s current research and development efforts focus on devising new means of helping educators, programs and institutions document, represent, and share their work effectively; this has been accomplished primarily by developing the Knowledge Exchange Exhibition and Presentation (KEEP) Toolkit, online toolkit that enables educators, programs and institutions to carry out this work more easily and efficiently.  The KML is currently providing the KEEP Toolkit both for the Foundation’s programs as well as for the public as a free online service (http://www.cfkeep.org).  Some of these efforts have been documented as case studies (http://www.carnegiefoundation.org/kml/KEEP/cases.htm).  The KML is also working to develop a distributable open-source software package version of the KEEP Toolkit so that other educational institutions and organizations can take advantage of the technology to support their local efforts.  In addition, to further advance this work at national and international levels, the KML is working to develop a distributed network of repositories of knowledge in effective teaching and learning.

The Foundation is seeking a full-time program associate to join a small technical team that works with Senior Scholars and other academic staff on various technology development and implementation projects at the KML.  A major responsibility of the program associate is to help further develop the KEEP Toolkit and digital repositories to support the work of Foundation’s programs.  Responsibilities include coding with PHP, Javascript, and HTML.  In addition, another important responsibility of this position is, working in close coordination with the Foundation’s system administrator, to administer a half dozen Linux servers for the KML, and handle various aspects of server support.  Responsibilities for this part of the work include (but not limited to) setup, configuration, and troubleshooting of Apache web servers; maintenance, tuning, and troubleshooting of MySQL databases; maintenance, upgrades, and troubleshooting of the PHP environments; routine backup of user and system data; security and performance monitoring; upgrading and patching of system hardware and software; and setup and maintenance of development and quality assurance testing environments.   The ideal candidate will have strong interest in emerging educational technology and working in an academic work environment.

Required Qualifications:
●	Bachelor's degree in information systems, computer science, or equivalent experience.
●	Solid background in systems administration in a production server/development server environment.
●	Experience in setup, maintenance, and development of LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP).
●	Facility with web development tools and methods especially PHP, MySQL, XML, Javascript, HTML.
●	Working experience in quality assurance and performance testing; the use of control systems (CVS) and bug/issue tracking systems.
●	Ability to create and maintain high-quality documents including functional requirements, and technical specifications and procedures.
●	Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
●	Ability to work harmoniously and effectively in a strongly collaborative, collegial work environment

Highly Desirable Qualifications:
●	Experience in learning management system/educational tool development especially using open source technologies.
●	Experience in working with academic clients and/or working in academic settings.
●	Experience in Java software development, especially in web applications and services utilizing Tomcat and JSP.
●	Redhat certification.

Minimum three years development experience LAMP or similar environment.

Compensation for this position will be based on the level of academic and other relevant experience. Ideally, candidates would be available to begin work in January/February 2005 and would be able to continue with the project for at least one year with possible extension.
