The Benetech Fellowship program is an opportunity for experienced
professionals to engage in meaningful and socially compelling technology
projects for a period of nine to twelve months. It provides an
environment where an individual can increase his or her professional
knowledge and enhance their skills, and at the same time make a
difference in the lives of people helped by Benetech's nonprofit
mission, "technology serving humanity."

Fellows work at Benetech's Palo Alto office and receive a stipend of
$600 per week


Bookshare.org Engineering Fellow (#EF)


Summary: Play a key role in the ongoing development of Bookshare.org, an
online digital book service run by Benetech and used by people with
visual impairment or learning disabilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

*	Implement a new, easier to use web presence for Bookshare.org 

*	Enhance the quality of our XML markup and book metadata,
including the automated retrieval of book-related information from other
sites on the Internet 

*	Develop heuristic algorithms for identifying chapters in scanned
books, and improving recognition of page numbering

Qualifications:

*	One or more years experience writing programs in PHP 

*	At least 4 years of workplace experience with OO languages,
including Java 

*	Working knowledge of Linux 

*	Desire to improve your skills, and to work closely with
teammates 

*	Excellent communication skills, detail orientation, creativity,
and a sense of humor 

*	Enthusiasm about working for a nonprofit, with other highly
skilled software developers

Relevant optional experience:

*	Familiarity with HTML and XML required; XSLT familiarity a plus 

*	Experience with relational database design a plus 

*	Familiarity with web services (such as SOAP) a plus 

*	Familiarity with software development on Mac a plus
