These are direct hire positions

The Company

Apptran Software Inc. is a top-tier-VC-funded software development company
based in the San Francisco Bay / Peninsula area. Apptran is an early-stage
stealth-mode software start-up. Apptran is building a high performance,
enterprise class server application to run on Linux/Unix. As well as
providing massive scalability and reliability, our server application is
designed to interoperate effectively with widely deployed proprietary
technologies, while maintaining compatibility with open standards. For more
information visit us at http://www.apptran.com

The company has a functional beta product, but significant work remains to
be done in the areas of performance, enterprise deployment, interoperability
and advanced features. Most of our code base is in C++, with some work done
in python and web development in php.

We offer an attractive package that includes salary, generous stock options,
benefits, and the chance to build a robust, scalable application on Linux.
As an early-stage employee, you will have the career-building and personally
satisfying opportunity to help define architectures and technical directions
that solve current issues and act as a platform for future developments.

Open positions:

1) Snr. Engineer: Linux-server-application-engineer. This person will
typically have experience of building highly scalable Unix / Linux based
server systems, as well as being a highly skilled C++ programmer.

2) Snr. Engineer: Database-server-engineer. This person will typically have
experience of building highly scalable database-derived systems, as well as
being a highly skilled C++ programmer. Note that we are not looking for
simple "database programming" skills here, rather the detailed capability of
implementing a high-throughput system based around a database; such a person
might well be capable themselves of implementing an efficient database (even
if they had not in fact done so).

The "Linux-server-application-engineer" and "DB engineer" categories shade
into one other somewhat. A great programmer, experienced with scalable
server apps, and with some DB knowledge might be able to fill this role. It
does not have to be an out-and-out domain-area specialist - though it could
be.

3) Snr. Engineer: Email expert. Expertise in implementing highly scalable
IMAP and/or SMTP systems. Might come from spam / virus gateway background,
or from an email server background.

Note: Given the domain knowledge we have in the company already, a great
programmer with decent domain knowledge could easily be successful, and very
likely preferable to a deep-expert on the domain who was less capable as a
programmer and designer.

4) Snr. Engineer: LDAP and/or Directory Authentication. Knowledge of
authentication systems such as SASL, GSS API, Kerberos and NTLM. Knowledge
of the LDAP protocol especially in respect of Active Directory.

Requirements:

7 years minimum software product development experience. Senior positions
require substantially experience in architecture, design and trade-off
analysis

History of taking initiatives in unknown subjects and producing reliable
working modules

Exceptional intellectual/professional and problem-solving abilities

BS or MS in Computer Science, EE, Math or Physics or Engineering preferred

Energetic, self-motivated, can-do approach

Outstanding C++

Background in Linux or Unix product development

Experience of server-based development
